This rare variety offers a pleasurable combination of peanut buttery nutty flavor, subtler sweetness, and enjoyably chewy bite, that lends it to a range of savory or sweet applications as well as eating out of hand.
The Zahidi harvest begins in September and usually sells out in late spring. The 2013 crop sold out on April 27, 2014.
- The Zahidi offers a wonderfully nutty flavor that is often reminiscent of peanut butter, occasionally with a slight tang that brings to mind dried apricots. Its sweetness is clearly present when the date is eaten out of hand, but is subtler than all of the 7HOTDATES except for Deglet Noor. This combination of nutty flavor and softer sweetness means that it can be enjoyed even by those who find Medjool, Khadrawy, Halawy, and Honey dates too sweet. Zahidis can add a touch of sweetness and nutty sophistication to salads and savory entrees, while still being delicious in a sundae.
- A firmer date that keeps its shape in salads, hors d'oerves, breads, and bars, Zahidi offers and enjoyable chewy texture. Many people enjoy eating Zahidis straight, also, and appreciate that they can pop a Zahidi in their mouth without getting their hands gooey! (The same is true for Deglets.)
- If you enjoy firmer texture dates and nutty flavor, give Zahidi a try. Chances are, you'll join the growing fan club of this rare, largely unknown date variety.
